On March 25-26 the finals of IV FIHB Mediterranean League were played. Throughout the season the teams have played and trained for this moment, for the victory and to get the first place in the competition.
Of course, we have lived great matches and were able to enjoy some of the best horseball matches that can be remembered. Remember that this is the only international horseball league, in which some of the best clubs in Spain, Italy, France and Portugal participate, as well as many of the best players worldwide in this sport. A league in which three categories participate: Under 16, Ladies and Pro-Elit. With a total of 22 teams and more than 140 players.
The finals were held in the magnificent facilities of Les Haras de la Gesmeray in the French town of Beziers. A weekend without incidents or complications that has been executed perfectly.
On Saturday, the competition began with 11 matches between the three categories.
In the Pro-Elite category, the matches in the lower zone of the classification were played, to begin with. The first was between Alforges and the French team of St Remy. A good game from the young Alforges players allowed them to take advantage from the start and in this way, prevail by 8 goals to 5. The second match was between the Portuguese of Fifth Woman Figueira and the French of Creissan, home team. A match between two great teams that came to the end with a tie on the scoreboard.
As it was a semi-final (in the lower part) the match had to be resolved in the Golden Goal (first team to score hungry). After several attempts, the Portuguese got the winning goal and in this way fought, on Sunday, for 5th and 6th place. The decisive moment arrived, the semifinals of the competition. The first of them between El Serrat and Malla.
A great defense of Serrat's players allows them to go into the second half with two goals difference, 3 to 1. An equalized second half, but which Malla's could not get back, gave the first pass in the final to the Serrat team for 6 goals to 4. The other semifinal was played by CEEC and HB Banyoles. The game was facing off for the Cardedeu team that arrived with a magnificent result of 5 goals to 1 at the start of the second half. Those of HB Banyoles, however, did not give up and after scoring 2 goals from P2 and another from P1 they approached the CEEC. With a very exciting finish, in the last minute two goals from HB Banyoles and another from CEEC left us a tie on the scoreboard.
The passage to the final would be resolved in the Golden Goal! A golden goal very well managed by Banyoles who was able to score, overcome the result against and be the second finalist in the category.
In the Ladies category, remember that this is a regular back-and-forth league.
The first two teams to play were the local Creissan and the Portuguese of Quina donna Figueira. A duel that Fifth started dominating but that Creissan, with a dynamic and fast game, managed to come back winning by only a goal 6 to 7. This was followed by a match between El Serrat/Malla and HB Banyoles where the third place of the championship was played.
An excellent game by the Serrat girls let them take advantage at all times and achieve an important victory against a direct rival, for once again only a goal 6 to 5. Finally a game that was like a final. The first classified, CEEC, and the second, Alforges. With the victory, CEEC would get, missing a game to play, the first place in the championship. Still undefeated team, which with another great show of strength, achieved an important victory by 10 goals to 4 and with it the first place of the IV FIHB Mediterranean League in the Ladies category.
In the Under 16 category, just like Pro-Elit, Saturday's games would give us the teams that will fight in the final. The day began with matches from the lower zone of the classification.
The first HB Banyoles and Green Bay. A game played and with an amazing game from Green Bay that still and in this way, was surpassed by those of HB Banyoles who won 10 to 7.
The second was between Montpellier and Alforges, a match that did not disappoint and that was resolved by only two goals in favor of the Catalans who achieved the victory by 5 goals to 3.
It was the turn of the Semifinals of the category. The first between the Catalans of CEEC and the French of the Etrets. An almost unstoppable attack from the French did not give them a chance to Ceec who still and fighting until the end were defeated by 8 goals to 2. So, Los Etrets were the first team to get a place for the cherished final. The second semifinal was between the Italians of Saluzzese/Vallalta and the boys of Serrat. A game with many goals and that the Italians managed to bring to their ground, winning comfortably by 4 goals to 10.
With these games, now it was the turn of the FINALS. In Pro-Elit category HB Banyoles and El Serrat, in Under-16, Els Etrets and Saluzzese/Vallata.
In the Ladies category we already have CEEC as champion.
The second day arrived and the last games of the season started.
The matches in the Pro-Elite category started with a duel between the last two classified, Creissan and St. Remy. A game that Creissan dominated and won by 6 goals to 2. It was the turn of the Fifth Woman Figueira i Alforges.
A great match between two big clubs that was settled in the second half when Alforges got a three-goal lead that he could hold until the end of the match won by 8 goals to 5.
The match was coming for third place between CEEC and Malla. Two great teams that gave us some of the best plays of the championship.
A match that CEEC, thanks to his good management of the ball and a great goal at the end of the first half, was able to bring to his ground by taking a three-goal lead and winning by 10 goals to 7 getting third place in the championship.
In the Ladies category, already with CEEC as champion and the classification quite resolved, the matches were inconsequential but, all wanted the victory.
The Portuguese of Cinquena and HB Banyoles began. A calm game and with few errors from the Banyoles girls, allowed them to take the victory by 6 goals to 9.
Then the French from Creissan and the Catalan from Alforges. A good game of the first, which in this championship have gone from less to more, allowed them to take a 5-goal advantage from the beginning of the match. An advantage that Alforges could not recover, being overcome by the forceful result of 8 goals to 2.
Finally, CEEC and El Serrat/Malla that if he won he could get the third position. The CEEC girls were already champions, but they wanted to give an authority shot and finish the competition undefeated, getting a 13-goal victory at 3 in favour.
It was the turn of the Under 16. To start the game for seventh place between Green Bay and the French Montpellier. We can say that the Madrilenians of Green Bay in this championship have gone from less to more and that they were able to demonstrate in this match. They achieved their first victory in the championship and thus, the penultimate place, winning by 6 goals to 7 in the last seconds and with an explosion of more than deserved happiness. The next was played by Alforges and HB Banyoles.
A very equal match in which either of the two could come out the winner and that finally ended in a draw 8 to 8, settling in the golden goal. A golden goal with opportunities for both teams but that finally took the HB Banyoles team winning by 8 goals to 7.
The match for third place was played by two Catalan teams, CEEC and El Serrat.
A great game with great plays, an immaculate defense of both teams and a dynamic game. This meant that once again, demonstrating the great level of all the teams in the championship, this had to be resolved in the golden goal. He finished the game 7 to 7 and the third place was at stake.
After several attempts by Serrat, those of CEEC managed to get the ball and score the goal that gave them the victory.
The two finals were coming and the atmosphere was very euphoric and with a large number of public. First the Under 16 final between Els Etrets and Saluzzese/Vallata.
A forceful defence on both sides left the game with just one goal difference at the end of the first half for the French. In the second, the Italians did not give up, but the effective defense and good management of the ball of the Etrets made this goal stand until the end, managing to win the first place in the championship by 6 goals to 5. A very worthy final, between two rivals, who will surely see each other again.
The moment everyone was waiting for, the final between HB Banyoles and El Serrat.
This year the Pro-Elite category has had the highest level since this league was created. The teams that could have reached this point are different and this shows the great level of form in which these two clubs reached.
The game began and a tight end was already smelling. The first goals were slow to arrive, with strong defense on both sides. In this way, we reached the start of the second half with the advantage of a goal 3 to 2 in favor of Serrat. An advantage that HB Banyoles was able to come back and get 5 to 4 a few minutes from the end. It was then, when El Serrat showed his experience in finals in recent years, knowing how to react, to go back again and end up winning the final of the highest category by 5 goals to 7.
