The CSIO Barcelona returned strong in its 111th edition. With its four-day format, the RCPB premiered its brand new grandstand, which has become the epicenter of world equestrian sport.
This year, seven of the best riders and Amazons in the international top ten (Sweden's Henrik von Eckermann, France's Julien Epaillard, Switzerland's Steve Guerdat, his compatriot Martin Fuchs, the American Mclain Ward, Harrie Smolders of the Netherlands and the gal rider Simon Delestre) took part in the contest, closing one of the best posters in its history.
From 28 September to 1 October, the more than 40,000 visitors of CSIO Barcelona were able to enjoy the best shows, gastronomy, lifestyle... And, above all, a lot of sport. A luxury for all the senses in an edition in which all the tickets were sold several days in advance, which caused the stands to show an appearance of absolute fullness.
Likewise, the FEI (International Equestrian Federation), which a few months ago made public its decision to keep Barcelona as the venue for the final of the most important team jumping competition on the international equestrian calendar until 2027, showed its enormous satisfaction with the development of the competition.
With the victory of the German team in the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup Final (Jana Wargers (Dorette), Christian Kukuk (Checker 47), Hans-Dieter Dreher (Elysium) and Richard Vogel (United Touch S), the gold point and finish at CSIO Barcelona was placed on Sunday. The German side won thanks to the three runs without penalty of Christian Kukuk, Hans-Dieter Dreher and Richard Vogel, securing their second Longines Nations Cup on the Olympic track of the Real Club de Polo in Barcelona, after the achievement in 2016.
In second place was the team of France, followed by Belgium, Brazil (which achieved the Olympic place that was in play for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games), the United States, Switzerland, Great Britain and Ireland. In addition, the German Hans-Dieter Dreher, the Swiss Martin Fuchs and the Belgian Wilm Vermeir shared the prize of 100,000 euros for having finished the final and qualifying rounds without penalty.
Another of the big winners of this edition of the CSIO Barcelona 2023 was the Dutch team, winner of the Longines Challenge Cup, a test that closed the third day of the CSIO Barcelona. The night competition, played during one of the already traditional gala dinners, brought together the seven nations that did not get access to the grand final. The test was decided in a tiebreaker, after finishing Netherlands and Australia tied at four points. Dutchman Willem Greve, with Highway Tn, completed without penalty, while Australian Christopher Burton, riding Chedington Hazy Toulana, added four points, giving way to the Dutch triumph. Jur Vrieling (Long John Silver 3 N.O.P.), Kim Emmen (Inflami Go) and Maikel van der Vleuten (Beauville Z N.O.P) completed the winning set, which featured Jos Lansink as team leader.
In third place was the team of Mexico, Argentina was fourth, followed by Spain, Italy and Uzbekistan.
Julien Epaillard, riding Donatello d'Auge, was the winner of the Ciutat de Barcelona Trophy, one of the most emblematic competitions of the CSIO Barcelona. The French rider was the fastest of the nine riders who finished the first stride without penalty and got access to the second sleeve. Behind Epaillard was his compatriot Simon Delestre (Dexter Fontenis Z), followed by number one in the world rankings, the Swede Henrik von Eckermann, with Glamour Girl.
Dutchman Harrie Smolders, with Kerglenn's Deesse, prevailed in the Queen's Cup — Safe Widows Trophy, a tiebreaking test that took place on Saturday afternoon. Italian Piergiorgio Bruggi (Hantano) ranked second, followed by Frenchman Olivier Robert, riding Iglesias D.V.
Throughout the week riders, Amazons, owners and all the people linked to the event, were able to have a magnificent “shuttle service” from the prestigious automotive brand Porsche.
